Why Shetland?

Shetland is one of the best places in Europe for watching otters in the wild.

The Shetland population of Eurasian otters (Lutra Lutra) is approximately 12% of the UK total and is probably one of the most dense populations in Europe.

Otters thrive alongside the relatively low human population in Shetland where access to food and the lack of human pressure means that Shetland otters are active during the day, which is in contrast to the nocturnal habits of otter populations elsewhere. Learn more ...

How long will it take?

We would recommend that you allow us at least 6hrs to try and find these wild and elusive animals, as we never know how long it will take to encounter them.

Are our Otter Watching days suitable for children?

Our tours are not suitable for children under 12 years of age unless they are used to watching wildlife and remaining quiet and still for long periods of time.

What is the best time of year to see otters?

Otters in Shetland are active throughout the year.

Most visitors to Shetland prefer summer months so they can also see the breeding birds, our native plants it is also the best time of year for the opportunity of seeing Whales and Dolphins!

I will try and give you an experience that you will never forget and with a bit of luck get you better views of otters in Shetland than anyone else.

Of course as with all wildlife I cannot provide any guarantees but if you can give me your time - whether a few hours or a whole day or more - I will try my utmost to give you an experience that will last a lifetime.
